Hello, neighbor.

Portrait of Scott

My name is Scott. Last year, I began asmall project to connectmy passion for growing vegetables with neighbors who desire fresh, locally-grown, organic produce. This year, I am expanding the salad circle. I hope you will join my club.

ABOUT THE GARDENER

Locally grown

I’m neither a commercial farmer nor a large market gardener. You won’t find me at your local farmer’s market. You can, however, find me around the corner, down the street, or perhaps next door.

There was a time when a backyard garden was as common as a car in the driveway and it served a vital function of home economics. Five years ago, I built a small-scale home garden of approximately 600 square feet. Annually, it produces more than 800 pounds of valuable food.

Life-long passion

I have been growing vegetables since I was able to carry a shovel, learning from my grandfather the value of growing a bit more than needed so he could share with friends and neighbors. While I learned a lot about producing vegetables from my grandfather, I have never stopped learning new gardening practices and adapting to new conditions.

Why I stopped digging

I used to till my soil into a fluffy, cake-like uniformity as my grandfather did, but I now recognize the soil as a robust living habitat unto itself. By disturbing the soil as minimally as possible, I foster a vibrant population of fauna and flora beneath the surface which helps to transport nutrients to plants, improve soil structure, and improve optimal moisture retention. The results are minimal weeds, fewer diseases and pests, and healthier plants.
